News from Lois:
For most of my thirty years in a first grade classroom, I have strived to provide a mathematics program that incorporates current research about what we know about how young children learn and one that supports each student's mathematical development.
I believe it is important for my young charges to investigate problems using mathematics manipulatives and other strategies to find out things for themselves. I want them to be able to clarify their thinking by talking to friends and listening to what they have to say as well as writing their experiences using words, pictures, and mathematical symbols. My goal is to have each student develop flexibility when thinking about and using number.
All children should be encouraged to think with numbers, ask questions, collaborate with peers, discuss their ideas, strategies and solutions, and justify their thinking.
Providing the best possible learning environment, instruction and curriculum for the students who pass through my classroom has been my professional goal. Helping others on a local, state and national level implement mathematical teaching practices that support young learners is, and will forever be, my passion.
