MATH PERSPECTIVES
Assessing Math Concepts Books and Institute

Math Perspective's Assessing Math Concepts (AMC) is a continuum of formative assessments and professional development to deepen teachers' understanding of the Critical Learning Phases and their understanding of the mathematics they teach.

The short assessments, developed by Kathy Richardson, are a cohesive look at the development of students' understanding of the core math concepts. They are not a random collection of questions focused on a child's ability to get correct answers. The information gathered from the assessments helps teachers pinpoint what each child knows and still needs to learn. They are not about 'helping children be right' but about uncovering what they still need regarding instruction.

Each assessment book provides the teacher background information for giving and using the assessments, instructions for doing classroom observations, tips for organizing information, and suggestions for instruction. Blackline masters are included and can be reproduced for classroom assessment activities.

The assessment interviews can be done either using traditional paper and pencil or using the technology component, AMC Anywhere, the web-based applications for Mac and PC computers.

Assessing Math Concepts Institute

The Math Perspectives Assessing Math Concepts (AMC) Institute is designed for teachers, math coaches, math coordinators, teacher-leaders, professional developers and other educators who support professional development of kindergarten through third grade teachers of mathematics. AMC is an in-depth study of how children learn number concepts. Participants spend the week immersed in looking at children’s thinking and learning to identify students' instructional needs.

Participants learn to use the Assessing Math Concepts assessments developed by Kathy Richardson and how to help teachers use the assessments to inform instruction in their classrooms.
